Happenings The Marion Public Library is holding a fundraiser through Nov. 28. You may order from the Avon Holiday Catalog, and proceeds go to the library. You can also call 926.0810 to place an order. REMEMBER: The East Palmyra Christian School is having a ham dinner by reservation only, this evening. Call 597.4400 for reservations. The Food Collection, for the Marion Food Pantry, carried out by the Marion boy Scouts, amounted to 200 cases of contributions which is near two tons of foodstuffs. Thanks to the Marion Scouts and their leaders! If you have extra toys and stuffed animals in good condition, leave them at our house. We will get them to shelters for abused women. Laura Means, a former resident of Marion, is recuperating at her home at Carey Road in Sheds, following hip surgery. Do you remember sometimes getting a 'free' ice cream sucker stick at the Marion Candy Kitchen? Call to get your citrus from the Marion School band members. 926.4428. November 17 is Family Night Roller Skating Party, sponsored by the Marion PTA. 7-8:30 p.m. in the elementary school gym. All children must be accompanied by an adult. No school November 22-24. NOVEMBER 19, 1931: The Married People's Bridge Club met with Mr. and Mrs. William White and the Younger Married People's Bridge Club met with Mr. and Mrs. Albert Curtis on Saturday evening. A Thanksgiving memory: 'I lay five kernels of dried corn on every place setting at Thanksgiving dinner to remember the starvation the Pilgrims endured in 1621. That was their daily ration before the first crops came in. When you see it, you know how little it was. Of the one hundred two passengers on the Mayflower, only fifty-one survived. I am descended from two of them. So I give thanks to my ancestors, who struggled against all odds.' (Caroline Lewis Kardell, historian general of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, in Plymouth, Massachusetts.) December 2 is the open house at the museum, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Featuring a collection of 'Scrap Books.' Marion Historic Association has two coverlets still for sale. The first one comes in hunter green and the 1998 Historic Scenes of Marion has all new scenes and designs. The color is navy with cream and green accents. They are two and 1/2 ply, 100% cotton and are available by calling Diane VanLare at 926.5010 or me at 926.4436. The price is $45 plus tax. We also mail coverlets for an additional charge of $3. There are some of the Christmas ornaments still available. The 1999 issue has the Marion grange building colored in red. These lovely ornaments make a wonderful hostess gift and are each $10. Others available are: The Band Stand, The Young's Homestead, Atlantic Hotel, Marion Railroad Depot. The ornament with the Grange building will also be available at the Town Library, where 1/2 of the proceeds will be added to their building fund. Thanksgiving Hymn Sing - at the United Church on Weds., November 22. Dick Crooks, a good friend of the United Church family, will be on hand for this Thanksgiving Service. A fellowship time will follow. 7:30 p.m. Tyler Hares will be playing Benjamin in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on November 17 at the Wayne Central School. 'Happy Birthday' to Mary Filibert on November 19. Congratulations! to Dottie Kittle of Newark, who was the lucky winner of the 'Special Event Santa' at the Leaning Barn open house. Marion Master Minds are doing well. Adam Loucks, Pete Goodridge, and Tim Abel scored for Marion. The cross country team ran well at Sectionals. Senior Liz Boerman earned a Sectional shield for the third consecutive year by being a top ten runner in Class DD. Also running well for Marion were Jane Bovet, Deb Hussey, and Craig Dolecki. So you're stuck with two bushels of butternut squash. The easy way to cook it (peeling is so difficult) is to scrub the squash, cut into pieces, boil until soft. After it cools, the peeling comes right off. Job's done!
