Marion Museum open house

On December 2, the Marion Museum will join other area museums in a county-wide open house.

Scrapbooks will be displayed at the Marion Museum from 10 until 2. There will be scrapbooks lovingly kept by someone way back as far as 1883. Some have saved articles which have been pasted in an old textbook. Others have been put in big, heavy wallpaper books. There will also be the ones made between 1975 and 1977 during the Bicentennial-Sesquicentennial years. Maybe you have one that you might like to loan for the day.

Dessert this year is Town Historian Carolyn Adriaansen's 'Orange Candy Slice Cake.' And here's the recipe!

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1/2 lb. dates (cut into pieces)
2 cups chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in
1/2 cup buttermilk
11 oz. orange slice candy

(cut into 5-6 pieces)
4 eggs
3 1/2 cups flour
3 1/2 oz. coconut

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Add flour alternately with buttermilk. Roll nuts, candy and date pieces in small amount of flour, then stir into batter, along with coconut.

Pour the batter into a tube pan and bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours in a 250 degree oven.

ORANGE SAUCE

1 cup orange juice
2 cups powdered sugar

Mix well and pour over cake as soon as it's taken from the oven. Let cake stand in pan overnight.
