Conservation projects completed The Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) has completed 14 conservation/drainage projects scheduled for this year under the Agricultural Group Drainage Program, plus five additional projects. Sponsored by the County Board of Supervisors, this program is designed as a water management program for existing (natural) and non-existing (engineered) drainage systems. The benefits of the program include improved drainage on agricultural lands, flood prevention, habitat improvement for wildlife and water quality improvements by reducing stormwater erosion. The District is now maintaining all projects on a five-year rotation and has over 21 qualifying projects on a waiting list. New projects that were completed this year include: the Quarry Road Project in the Town of Sodus, the Montezuma Street Project in the Town and Village of Lyons, and the Sodus Center Road Ditch Extension in Sodus. Maintenance was performed on 11 other projects in seven other towns across Wayne County. In addition to these projects, the SWCD has completed four erosion control projects that involved critical area seeding and mulching. These projects help to reduce the erosion of topsoil into our waterways by providing a protection layer and by stimulating seed germination. One shoreline stabilization project was also completed using stone-filled gabion baskets, with assistance from the Wayne County Highway Department. The Wayne County SWCD would like to thank the landowners involved with these projects for their cooperation. The countyAgricultural Group Drainage Program and the new erosion control program are two of fourteen programs and services offered to Wayne County Residents. All of the SWCD's programs are related to the management and protection of Wayne County's natural resources.
