'The Matchmaker' to be staged at NHS

The Newark High School Drama Club will present Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker on October 19, 20, and 21 at the high school auditorium. Directed by Mr. Damian Koviak, The Matchmaker is a lively comedy in four acts, set in and around New York City in the late 1800's.

All tickets are $5 and available at the door for each of the 7:30 p.m. performances.

The cast of characters includes Dolly Levi (played by Gretchen Snedeker), an adventurer and lover of life, who is determined to marry Horace Vandergelder (Richard Austin), the cantankerous Merchant of Yonkers.

Elliot locco and Andy Sloane will entertain audiences as Barnaby and Cornelius, Vandergelder's clerks, out on the town with Mrs. Irene Molloy (Sarah Chilson), the lively milliner; and Miss Minnie Fay (Colleen Hallagan), her charming assistant.

Rounding out the cast are: Justin Kraham as Ambrose, Leah Daniels as Ermengarde, Evan Franchi as Malachi, Susanna MacLaren as Mrs. Van Huysen, Jennifer Seavert as Gertrude, Andrew Boeckmann as Rudolph, Jessica Allen as The Cook, and Luke Starkenburg as Joe Scanlon.

If the characters and plot are beginning to sound familiar, it is because the hit musical Hello, Dolly! is based on this wonderful play. Although The Matchmaker is not a musical, audiences will be treated to a bit of singing and lovely period costumes.
