Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Well, I guess Summer (Indian or otherwise) is over. We tried to enjoy those last days by going for a walk down by the pier. We even ventured out to the Buffalo Zoo last Sunday. I'm sure when it begins getting really cold here in the North, we'll need those memories to keep us warm.

And speaking of nice days, since Sarah gets her baths outside with the hose, we gave her the last one of the season during the warmer days, during the winter its back to the bath tub and water all over the floor.

I had a visit from Eileen Hooper and her Mom over the weekend. They looked really good and had come north from Florida for Eileen's brother's wedding. The wedding was held at his home by the lake, and the Sarah the dog visit by Betty and Eileen was a total surprise by many of the wedding guests. (Betty I'm sure they knew about, but Eileen was a different matter.) She brought her photo album and took a picture of Caesar to add to it. Eileen is doing hair for the mannequins at Disney now and enjoying every minute. Betty, who had gone back south to escape our chill, mentioned that where they live, they see hot air balloons floating past their homes every morning and fireworks every evening.

The Girl Scout Troop #39 of the Sodus/Sodus Point Service Unit won their Silver Award in a ceremony in their honor on October 1 at the Bible Baptist Church. This is an exciting award because the Sodus, Sodus Point area has not won this award in twenty years - if not more. The Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl Scouting. Over 60 girls received a badge during the Ceremony. The girls also donated a van filled with food and supplies to the Humane Society. Congratulations, girls, on a job well done . Congratulations also to their proud leaders: Ruth Lennox and Julie Beckens.

More fun and exciting news - did you see Cheryl Gravelle of the Williamson Library the other day in the Our Towns section of the Democrat and Chronicle? Mrs. Gravelle is now the Director of the Williamson Free Library. Also shown in the article was six-year-old Daphne Croop. The library will have its Used Book Sale next week - Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 12-14. Thursday, it's 10-8:30; Friday is 10 to 5; decorated deck and Saturday is Buck-A-Bag Day from 10 to 2.

If you haven't gone on the Sodus-Newark train ride to look at the leaves you still have time Saturdays, October 7 and 14 and Sundays October 8,15, and 22. To order tickets, call 716.224.0581

This weekend is the 3rd Annual Wayne County Apple Tasting Tour. Thirteen Farm Markets will be participating.

Next weekend, there will be Cemetery tours at the Sunnyside Cemetery on Rt. 21S in Williamson. Candles will be provided, and cider and donuts will be served. Dress warmly and bring a flashlight as well. For more info please call 589-9892

At Burnap's Farm Market on the corner of Lake Rd.and Maple Ave., you can pick your own pumpkin during October and, on Saturdays, there are Pumpkin Face Painting lessons. While you're at Burnap's, check out the homemade baked pies, cookies and muffins, too.

The Sodus Rotary Club's Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner will be held at the school cafeteria on Friday, October 20. Be sure to get your tickets soon.

Fall is definitely not boring during this time of year in Wayne County. If you are aware of a really fun event that I don't know about, write to me at

Have a great week. Get the sweaters out of the box!

Enjoy yourselves, maybe pickup some Halloween books for the kids at the Library and tell Mrs. Gravelle you saw her in the paper.
