Compost teach-in at Blue Cut Leaves are falling. Plants are dying in the gardens, people are preparing harvest feasts in the kitchens. From all that bounty, you can reap a second harvest - through the time-honored, nature-made, practice of composting.
On Saturday, October 28 the Western Finger Lakes Authority is organizing a compost Teach-In, an opportunity for people to learn about the skill of composting. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Blue Cut Nature Center on Route 31 between Lyons and Newark. A highlight of the event is a performance by Compost Theater, a troupe of volunteer performers from Ithaca. Compost Theater is made up of trained Master Composters who present information on composting, recycling and waste reduction in a humorous, cabaret-style format. They will perform at 11 a.m. Local personality Will Tillett, The Garden Guy, newspaper columnist from Palmyra-Macedon will pass along his gardening wit and wisdom. Tillett may be able to turn up some new solutions for hard-packed gardening questions. Additionally, Appleton's Disposal and Waste Management, the two companies that collect materials for recycling will have recycling trucks on display. Blue Cut Nature Center is the only Wayne County-owned nature center. It is about 40 acres, comprised of both marshland and hillside, supporting a variety of vegetation and wildlife. The Authority will have some compost containers available for purchase on that day (others may be ordered), and printed instructions for home-built compost containers.
