Newark garden clubs gear up for fall

Newark Garden Club

Although the Newark Garden Club does not meet officially during the summer months, they do continue assisting with Civic Beautification.

In May, the Garden Club planted the geranium beds in Central Park. Members have been maintaining the flowers throughout the summer. The rose bed on the northeast corner of the park is cared for by Ann Crowley and Shirley Turner.

Newark Garden Club will resume their monthly meetings on September 8, when they meet at Burnham's Canalside Restaurant at noon.

At this time the annual Civic Beautification Award will be awarded to a local business who has done an outstanding floral landscape display in front of their business.

Each member is asked to bring a garden arrangement of flowers or vegetables for exhibit. President Bea Phillips will preside.

The Gone-A-Gardening club

An evening garden club was formed in Newark three years ago to enable working people to have a chance to improve their gardening skills. The Gone-A-Gardening club meets Tuesdays during the winter months at the Arcadia Reform Church on Woodlane in Newark at 7:30 p.m.

Summer meetings are held at 7 p.m. in Eliot Park on Union Street, beside the Newark Diner. The park is a project the club members have adopted. They have cleaned some areas and have plantings in the fountain and continue to maintain what they have done. Since the club has been doing this, new village interest has emerged.

Anyone interested in joining an evening gardening group is encouraged to call 331.6824 for details.
