Troopers remind: 'Buckle Up New York'
State Troopers will join with local law enforcement agencies statewide in an attempt to encourage drivers to buckle up. Enforcement details will be conducted across the state. Troopers will be on patrol and using checkpoints to ensure that motorists traveling in New York State are wearing seatbelts. Troopers will be especially alert for seatbelt violations, speeding motorists and people driving while intoxicated. Major Lawrence suggests wearing your seatbelt at all times when operating a motor vehicle. New York State was the first state to enact a mandatory seatbelt law, which took effect in January, 1985. Nationwide, 48 states have safety belt laws and all 50 states have child safety seat laws.
