Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

So far this week has been nice, but after reading the weather forecast we'd better get out the sweaters and put some heavier blankets on the bed. It's time for gardeners to clean out the gardens, and back to homework for the kids.

Hope the weekend weather doesn't dampen all the events planned. There are quite a few:

pizza The Pultneyville Community Garage Sale is Saturday, rain or shine. There will be a Flea Market in Centennial Park, and get plenty of great food to eat.

The East Williamson Fire Dept. is having a Chicken Barbecue Saturday, take-out only beginning at 4:30 p.m. and in Sodus, there will be a Card & Game Party at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1-4 p.m. (Call 483.8513 TODAY for reservations.)

Wayne County Beach Clean Up Day will be Saturday, Sept. 16. For more information, call 946-7650.

And... Saturday also is the day of the 5th Annual Wine & Cheese at the Heluva Good Store. The event benefits Literacy Volunteers and will be held 1-4 p.m.

classic car If you enjoy Classic Cars, you won't want to miss the Classic Car show at the Wallington Firemen's Field this Sunday, Sept. l7, from 9:30 to 3:30. We found from the shows we've attended, Classic Car owners love to tell about their cars and how they got started collecting them. They are beautiful. (Remember to take along your cameras.)

The Humane Society is having a dog Walk-A-Thon, also this Sunday. Some dogs really do enjoy walking (unlike Caesar, who feels he needs to be pampered). The walk-a-thon begins is noon to five at Silver Hill Technology Park in Newark.

Also on Sunday, Mexican Fiesta at the Sodus Primary School starts at 3 p.m.

Did you see Helen Phillips and a few of the ladies enjoying their lunch at the new town park the other day? Seems like the perfect spot to enjoy lunch to me. Helen is volunteering at the Sodus Point Lighthouse until the Museum closes in October. She mentioned the new small-scale Trolley Exhibit they have. Have you seen it?

I received an e-mail from Carol Sprong Moysey, who used to live on Lake Road in Sodus where the Sprong Fruit Farm is. Now Carol lives with her husband in Poughkeepsie. Her niece, Anne Marie Keese, lives at the house in Sodus and has done much restoration. Carol said to say, 'Hi.'

Just a reminder: Make certain your children know that while it's nice to try to save hurt wild animals, it can be dangerous. One reader's daughters found a hurt bat in the area and brought it home to see if their mom could help. The mom called the vet, who gave her a number to call and was told to bring it in immediately. The bat was tested for rabies and, unfortunately for the girls, it was rabid. Trying to do a kindness turned out to be a painful experience with a series of shots. Rabies can be spread through the animal's saliva - you don't have to be bitten. When children see an animal in trouble, they forget what they've been told and it is difficult for them to leave the animal where it is.

mum plants Have you visited the greenhouses yet to look at hardy mums? Or tulip bulbs? Fresh corn and apples are at fruit stands everywhere. It's a fun part of the Fall season. The Apple Shed in Newark always had fresh donuts and really good things to eat. Just walking into the store reminds you of Fall.

Do you have a fun way to spend a Fall day? Do you have a cute craft idea others would like to do with their children, or an apple or pumpkin recipe you'd like to share? Thanks to everyone who has sent me information and to those of you who will be writing to me soon. Also thank you for the positive feedback, I appreciate it.

Enjoy your week and don't let the weather get you down... If it's rainy or chilly, get some good books from the library.
