Compost event at Blue Cut

learn more! Now that spring is here, gardeners are anxious to get out and work the soil, set some plants, see some new green.

The Western Finger Lakes Authority has scheduled a Compost Education Day so gardeners can get a head start on the growing season.

On Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Western Finger Lakes Authority will have information on composting, examples of backyard compost containers, and demonstrations on setting up composting systems. The event will be held at the Wayne County Blue Cut Nature Center. Blue Cut is located on Route 31 between Lyons and Newark, across from the Wayne County Highway Department. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Erie Canal Cultural Center on Water Street in Lyons.

Compost Theater, a volunteer group from Tompkins County, will perform at 1 p.m. The theater troop presents information on composting, recycling and other waste management topics in a fast-moving cabaret-style act with a humorous twist.

The Western Finger Lakes Authority has compost containers available for $35. The containers, made from recycled plastic, hold about three cubic yards of material, enough for a summer's worth of organic materials from a garden and yard.
