World Day of Prayer marked in Newark Newark's observance of National Day of Prayer will be Thursday, May 3, beginning at noon at Central Park. Various local pastors will lead in prayer for civic, school, county, state, national leaders and also for pastors and churches within our village. Mayor Peter Blandino will bring greetings. This year's observance will be 45 minutes in length to accommodate those individuals who need to return promptly to their work situations. This year's event marks the 50th consecutive observance of a National Day of Prayer. A resolution was unanimously passed by Congress and signed by President Harry S. Truman in 1952. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, designating the first Thursday in May as the annual day of prayer. Ever since John Hancock signed the congressional order establishing the first day of prayer in 1775, national days of prayer have been a traditional part of the American experience. This community will be joining millions of Americans across our country in expressing dependence upon the God whose grace has guided this nation's growth and progress since its birth more than 200 years ago.
