Verizon grant helps Newark Candy Apple

Candy Apple donationThe Verizon Foundation has awarded a $5,000 grant to the United Way of Wayne County. The grant will be used toward the development of TechKids, a program to help pre-school and primary age children get a jump start on early learning by introducing them to educational technology.

United Way, in partnership with Candy Apple Children's Center, is launching this initiative to enhance the childcare environment with learning activities that reflect the highest ideas in early learning. The program hopes to bridge the 'digital divide,' the gap separating children of low-income families from families with access to technology in homes and pre-schools.

Verizon, a leading telecommunications firms, supports a variety of community related projects that emphasize new technology applications and education, health and human services, the arts and humanities, and civic development.

Verizon awarded the grant as a result of a proposal submitted by United Way Director Carol LiPani.
