Alton Methodist Church open house August 25

The congregation of the Alton United Methodist Church is celebrating this year. They welcome the public to an open house on Saturday, August 25 from 2-4 p.m.

Congregations have been worshipping in the 'Little Stone Church on the Hill' for 150 years. Tour guides will relate stories of the Cobblestone church, built by men of the congregation in the mid 1800's. The stones were transported by oxen-drawn stoneboats from the Lake Ontario shore.

The afternoon will ring with music - the church handbell choir, vocal, and instrumental music. The church fellowship hall is being transformed into a Victorian tea room for those who would like to journey back in time to the late 1800's to early 1900's. The tea menu includes dainty sandwiches, scones, pastries, cakes, cookies, tea, iced tea and old-fashioned lemonade.

Advance reservations for the tea ($5) may be made by calling Linda Furber 483-8529, Deb Mathews 483-6354, Susan VanLare 483-4027 or mail a check to the Alton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 150, Alton 14413.

Everyone is welcome to 'take a peek' at the historical building or come as a participant in the historical event. Come as you are in your most comfortable attire or as an actor in your vintage clothing, hat, gloves.
