Marion Supervisor notes The problem of unused or unwanted pesticides has been a concern among the agricultural community and those public agencies which serve them. This year the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District has secured a small grant to provide a pesticide disposal program, scheduled for this fall. Co-sponsors include the Solid Waste Management Authority, the Board of Supervisors, and local Emergency Planning Committee. Unused, expired, and unwanted pesticides will be accepted under an amnesty format. If you want to participate, call Soil & Water Conservation District office at 946.4136. The deadline for registration is August 31. A separate collection is being scheduled for household hazardous waste. The contact for that program is Marjory Haizlip (Solid Waste Management Authority) at 946.7650. This is your chance to get rid of those old paint cans, oil containers, etc. The new sign at the entrance to the Town Park was made by Town Employee Andy Kujawski. The school hopes to have a sign in place soon, to combine the Fueling Facility and the Park. Then we can move our new sign to the west side of the park so it can be seen from Route 21. The Marion Merchants have placed hanging flower baskets on the poles surrounding the four corners of the business district. I know it has been a struggle for them to keep them looking vibrant because of our lack of rainfall, but they have done a good job. Thank them as you patronize their establishments. There is a 'Welcome to Marion' sign at the other end of the town near where North Main Street enters onto Route 21, so we have a greeting at both ends of the bypass. 'Scooter World' has opened at their new location on the corner of Mill and South Main. Carl and Darlene Ocque sell and service scooters and bikes. Stop in or call them at 926.0707. We now have a law entitled 'Skateboards,' which essentially limits the areas in which skateboards are allowed. The most important restriction is that skateboards cannot be used on any sidewalk which is adjacent to a business establishment. The Town Board felt that this was necessary because we have had problems in the past with pedestrians having to dodge skateboards on the Main Street sidewalks. Last year it seemed to rain every week, especially on the weekends, and this year is just the opposite. I really respect the farmers whose livelihood depends on the whims of the weather systems. It's disappointing to have such a hot, dry season. Schools will be open the first week of September, and the elementary children especially will be walking to and from school, and maybe riding their bikes. We adults are the ones who should be responsible for looking out for the kids, who tend to act impulsively. Remember that the speed limit in the school zone is 15 mph and you may not pass a stopped school bus if lights are flashing!
