Mabel Knight marks 100 years

Mabel Knight

Today (August 22, 2001) marks the 100th birthday of Mabel Anderson Knight.

In 1923, newlywed Mabel Anderson Knight arrived in Newark with her husband, T. Spencer Knight. The couple had graduated from Washington University in Seattle, and Mr. Knight accepted a position with C.H. Stuart and Co.

'Spence' was the first Sergeant at Arms of the new club. The Newark Rotary was recently honored by a visit from Mrs. Knight. She received a dozen roses from the club, and in turn presented Rotary with a gift, following the tradition of her late husband. T. Spencer Knight was one of 23 men who, in October of 1926, founded the Newark Rotary Club. (2001 is the 75th birthday of the Club.)

Mrs. Knight and daughter, Nancy Knight Bloomer, are pictured in John Zornow's 1948 Ford, in which they were driven to the Rotary Club meeting.
