middle school students collection NMS students give to humane society

The Newark Middle School Student Council recently donated over $300 worth of pet food and supplies to the Wayne County Humane Society.

Student Council members planned a 'Feather Contest' in November to raise money for the Humane Society. The idea for such an activity began when someone wondered which staff member would be chosen by students as the 'Biggest Turkey.' Council members asked staff members to participate and soon, digital photographs of adults were created. Faces were shown with turkey bodies, and the photos were hung in the cafeteria. Student Council members made feathers from construction paper, and sold the feathers to fellow students during lunch.

Each time a feather was purchased for a specific staff member, it was added to the photograph of that person. The cafeteria began to look like a turkey farm. Some teachers chose to campaign on the morning announcements, which are broadcast live on all classroom televisions. Teachers pleaded to win, offering to be covered with mashed potatoes and gravy during a live broadcast if they were chosen as the 'Biggest Turkey.'

Others compared hair styles of participants to prove more worthy of turkey-dom. In an attempt to enlist additional teacher support, one contestant brought dog biscuits to be used as a bribe.

In the end, Mr. Tim Tanea was chosen the Turkey of the Year. Always a good sport, Mr. Tanea wore some turkey decorations during a live television acceptance speech. It appears his son, Chris, urged many classmates to purchase feathers for one particular candidate. When the contest was over, the donations totaled $330. Students used the Humane Society's 'Wish List' of daily necessities and decided to purchase kitten and puppy food, dog and cat food, cat litter, paper towels, garbage bags, detergent and bleach.

Student Council members would like to thank everyone at the middle school who donated money by purchasing turkey feathers. A special thanks goes to all staff members who participated!

(The C-G sends thanks to Terri Lagana for sharing this story and photograph.)
