Urgent need for blood

The American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region is calling for donors to give blood ASAP to help avoid a serious blood supply shortage.

Often donors do not keep their scheduled appointments. Severe weather conditions in Western New York and the forecast for additional snowfall in that area and the southern tier further jeopardizes the already reduced blood supply. The region is making an urgent plea for donors to help make up this shortfall in collections.

All blood types are needed, particularly types O Negative and B Negative. There is currently only a two-day supply of O Negative; and B Negative is at the medical approval level.

The Red Cross also needs donors for platelets, which only have a five-day shelf life. Platelets are being distributed to hospitals to meet immediate transfusion needs.
