Branich and Lyons Bank 'Racing for Kids'

Williamson-based Branich Motorsports, with driver Mike Emhof, is preparing for the Central New York Mini Sprint Tour.

In addition to their on-track activities, Branich will promote its Racing for Kids program, started three years ago.

Branich Motorsports is co-sponsoring with Lyons National Bank. Branich and LNB will team up to support children's charities. Dependent upon how the team finishes in the feature races on the Central NY Mini Sprint tour this year, Lyons National Bank will donate money, on behalf of Branich Motorsports, to support children's programs and initiatives in Wayne County.

Racing for Kids was designed to use the sport of automobile racing, one of the top spectator sports in the United States today, as an aid for teaching. Team members and elementary school teachers jointly develop a custom curriculum using some aspect of racing to teach a variety of grade-appropriate topics. The team visits each school, and the race cars, hauler, and support equipment and safety gear are displayed and used to present a particular topic. Generally, the children attend a session, look at the car up close, ask questions and talk to team members. They are able to walk through the trailer, and at the end of the tour they are provided pictures for coloring and team autographs.

In 2000, the team visited the French Road Elementary School in Brighton, St. Michael's School in Newark, and the Florentine Hendrick Elementary School in Wolcott, with presentations to over 450 children. The team and teachers have already planned the return visits to these schools this year.

Programs are also planned for the Pirate's Cove Pre-K program in North Rose, and classes in the Sodus and Williamson Elementary Schools.
