The Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce voted yesterday not to be the lead agency in the occupying and staffing of the Canal Interpretative Center now under construction. A motion by board member Michael Tonovitz led to a discussion concerning the logistics of staffing of the center by the chamber in exchange for 'free' rent. Tonovitz, former Village Clerk, said that the matter had been under consideration for quite some time by the Chamber and village officials with no formal plan offered. 'It is time to fish or cut bait,' said Tonovitz. The motion for a formal commitment was defeated, leading to a second motion to notify the Village of Newark that the Chamber cannot be the lead agency in staffing, based upon long-term fund-raising projections.
