This drawing depicts the proposed changes to the Veteran's Memorial in Newark's Central Park.

The plans call for the monument, which stands at the west end of the park, to be surrounded by concrete and six new flagpoles. Monuments to each of the five branches of service - Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force - will be set, with a flag for each. The sixth flagpole will fly the Stars and Stripes.

The proposal is being reviewed by the VFW, the American Legion, the Veterans Council and village officials. And although plans are still being okayed by several entities, Village Manager Jim Bridgeman said last week that he hopes to have the project complete by the Fourth of July.
