Mississippi River is DAR meeting topic

The Colonel William Prescott Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution of Wayne County will convene at the Chapter House, 119 High Street, Newark, on January 17 to inaugurate the new calendar year.

want to learn more? Sylvia Harding of East Palmyra, and Christine Robarge of Newark, will present an educational program - Cruising up the Mississippi River. Following their cruise down the Mississippi in 1996, Harding and Robarge presented an informative program at DAR. The earlier down trip was on the American Queen from Memphis, Tennessee to New Orleans, Louisiana. The August 1999 'up' trip was on the Mississippi Queen from St. Louis, Missouri to St. Paul, Minnesota.

Great contrasts of the two trips will be noted. On the southern route, there were no locks to negotiate, shore scenery was in the distance hidden behind levees and Ante Bellum homes were visited.

The upstream venture involved passage through 25 locks. Sometimes there were waits for the tows carrying grain, coal and cement to market, to pass through those same locks. There was a stop at Hannibal, Missouri for a tour of Mark Twain's boyhood home. Prior to docking at Wabasha, Missouri, bald eagles were sited in the trees and on the shore. Several of the total local travel group awaiting time for flight home visited the largest mall in the United States, the Mall of America in St. Paul.

The 1 p.m. slide program is open to the public.

The noon luncheon hostesses are: chair Mary Rindfleisch, Sharon Stresing, Monica Marr, all of Clyde, and Madelyn Jagger of Palmyra.
