It's quiet at the home of Mil and Vern Leenhouts, on Union Street, since Stuart and (their daughter) Joan Bornstein and family left for their home in Tappan, after spending the Christmas holiday with the folks.

Gordon and I had family members in for New Year's Eve for snacks and games, and an overnight which extended on to New Year's Day with more games. A lot of shoveling and a late dinner of new recipes for the New Year!

'If you eat too many doughnuts, you'll turn into one.'

With the weather we have been having I have been thinking of the Heritage Stew we served during the Bicentennial year. Roast a turkey till well done. Bone turkey and make a broth with drippings. To each 4 cups of turkey add: 2 cups chunked celery and leaves, 2 cups chunked carrots, 2 cups chunked potatoes, 2 cups lima beans and 1 cup corn. Cover with broth and cook until vegetables are tender. Add salt to taste. Thicken with corn starch.

The Red Ribbon Committee and the SOC (Supporting our Children) Group co-sponsored 'Make a Difference Day.' Many community groups, such as Girl Scout Troop 180, Boy Scout Troop 137, 4-H group, SOC, St. Gregory's TIC (Teens in Community), and various student and family groups joined together to do odd jobs in and around town. By doing good deeds in the community (which included raking leaves, washing windows, working at the Library Book Sale and the Marion Food Pantry) these various groups showed that they care about the people who live here
