Independence Day at the Lighthouse

In the mood for a little nostalgia on the 4th of July? Pack the family off to the Sodus Point Lighthouse Museum for an historic Independence Day on Lake Ontario.

The museum is housed in an 1870 granite Lighthouse, which guided ships to safe harbor, until 1901, when the job was taken over by the 'new' pier light. The Sodus Bay Historical Society rescued the Lighthouse from its state of abandoned neglect and opened it as a museum in 1985.

Special events on July 4 include Breakfast on the Bluff, sponsored by the Sodus Recreation Department, 7 to 11 a.m.

Lunch and dinner refreshments are available from the Sodus Bay Historical Society volunteers.

Register for the Lighthouse 5K Run, at 8 a.m. (starting pistol at 9 a.m.); then the race awards ceremony; and brief patriotic program.

At 3 p.m. Gap Mangione and his Big Band take the Gazebo stage for a free outdoor concert. The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Admission if free; donations graciously accepted.)

Bring your own seating and enjoy an early alfresco supper.

For more information on July 4th activities at the Lighthouse Museum, call Director Pat Kalima at (315) 483.4936.
