Breakfast on the Bluff

Food always tastes better outdoors, and there's nothing like a hearty country breakfast to get your Fourth of July off to a great start. This year, the Sodus Recreation Association will be preparing Breakfast on the Bluff from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Sodus Point Lighthouse Museum, 7606 N. Ontario St., Sodus Point.

'We will be having eggs, sausage, pancakes, coffee and juice,' said Breakfast Chairperson Laurie Mc Faul, who volunteers with the Sodus Recreation Association and manages the Heluva Good Cheese Country Store in Sodus. The entire repast is served under a tent on the scenic Lake Ontario bluff.

In past years, the breakfast has been faithfully cooked by the Sodus Chamber of Commerce. Griff Mangan of Alasa Farms, Alton, a member of the Chamber and a Lighthouse Board Member, helped McFaul with the transitional details, from tent set-up to how many eggs to buy.

'We want to make the passing of the torch go as smoothly as possible,' noted Mangan. The breakfast is especially popular with runners of the Lighthouse 5K, which begins at 9 a.m. 'A lot of the runners and their families stay after the race to enjoy the breakfast,' noted Lighthouse Director Pat Kalima.

The Sodus Recreation Association encompasses Sodus and Sodus Point. It is funded through town taxes, Wayne County, New York State and the Village of Sodus. Current programs include swimming in Sodus Point and summer tennis, outdoor soccer, track and field, arts and crafts and drama and dance. The Sodus Recreation Association also has programs in basketball, wrestling and bowling.

'We are looking at a new intergenerational program in the fall,' commented McFaul. Interested parties may call McFaul at 483.2223 days or 483.9894 evenings.

Cooking for large crowds is not a new experience for the Sodus Recreation Association. In the past, they have prepared the meal for a wrestling tournament featuring participants from all over Western, N.Y.

Additional activities at the Lighthouse Museum include an inventory reduction sale at the Gift Shop; a book signing by local historian and author Chris Arney, who has written a book on Sodus Bay called Son of the Silvery Waters, under the pen name Alan Firstone; a brief patriotic program; and a 3 p.m. free jazz concert by Gap Mangione and his Big Band.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day. The Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for tours. Admission is free; donations graciously accepted. For more information call 315. 483.4936.
