Newark citizens invited to discuss Route 31 plan

The community is invited to join representatives from the state Transportation Department and local officials at an open house meeting to ask questions and provide feedback about the preliminary plans for the reconstruction project of Route 31 in Newark.

The meeting will be Thursday, July 12 at the Newark Public Library's Community Room, 121 High Street from 3-8 p.m. There will not be a formal presentation.

The NYSDOT and Village of Newark, in cooperation with the Federal highway Administration, are developing design studies to make transportation improvements on Route 31 (Union Street), from Mason Street to Lyons Street.

The replacement of a culvert on Maple Avenue is also included in the design studies. The primary long-term objectives of this project are to improve safety, capacity, and mobility through the village. When this project is complete, there will be less congestion, better traffic flow through the intersections, improved pavement and drainage systems, as well as improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians. Final plans are expected to be complete in November.

Comments on the proposed project from individuals, groups, officials and local agencies will be encouraged throughout the development of the project, regarding social, economic and environmental issues. The design report is available at the Newark Public Library and the County Clerk's office.

Contact Brian Bellan at 716.272.3374, if a sign language interpreter, assistive listening system or any other accommodations will be required.
