Outhouses open for Peppermint Days

The Wayne County Historical Society will be hosting two events at the Museum on 21 Butternut Street during Lyons Peppermint Days.

The opening for the exhibit 'Inside Outhouses' will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, July 13. This exhibit contains items that once were commonly found inside outhouses, from a copy of an early catalogue to a bee's nest or two. Also displayed are photographs of outhouses that can still be found in Wayne County.

A 4x4x8 outhouse has been constructed by craftsman Sam Baker of Lyons. It's made of hemlock siding and is topped with a shake shingle roof. This two-holer will be sold in a silent auction and is suitable to be used as an outhouse or, more likely, as a storage or potting shed. It has been constructed so it can be easily moved from the exhibit room and reassembled at its new home.

Bids will be taken for this unique structure from July 13-December 2. To place your bid, call 946.4943

On Saturday, July 14, there will be a Museum Open House from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wayne County Historical Society Museum is housed in what was once the Wayne County Jail. From 1854 through 1961, the cells of the jail held the infamous, like convicted murder William Fee (the only person ever to be executed in the Wayne County Jail) and notorious train robber Oliver Curtis Perry, and the more common criminals, train riders, drunks and petty thieves. In 1962, the empty jail and attached sheriff's home became home to the Wayne County Historical Society and was filled with permanent and temporary exhibits that display examples of life in early Wayne County.
