Petition drive against county smoking law Barbara Meeks of Newark claims that county lawmakers have broken the law. A long-time opponent of a new county law that will ban smoking in almost all public places, Meeks has questioned the Wayne County Board of Supervisors on the validity of the legislation. She has also asked who determined that such a law not be subject to referendum. Meeks has called the smoking ban illegal and asked supervisors at their May meeting to rescind the law. With no move made in that direction, she has planned a petition drive in Newark Central Park this Saturday (July 14) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. The petition calls for the law to be placed on a ballot so that voters can determine whether or not Wayne County should be 'smoke free.'
