Former Newark woman will walk for arthritis

A former Newark resident needs help in her efforts to participate in an Arthritis Foundation marathon to be held in Ireland this fall.

Amy and Darryl Sapp Amy Sapp, now a resident of Baltimore, will be walking in honor of her grandmother, Erma Beman, of Welcher Road. According to Amy, her grandmother, who is 80, has lived with arthritis for most of her adult life. Along with the usual joint pain and stiffness, Mrs. Beman has also lost nerve control in her feet and hands.

'She is one of the lucky ones, though,' says Amy. 'She has been able to maintain a full and productive life. Many of the 43 million Americans who have arthritis are not so lucky.'

Amy herself suffers from Fibromyalgia, a pain and fatigue disorder that leaves many devoid of energy. Amy began walking in January when her knees began to show signs of arthritis. When she began walking, doctors told her she wouldn't be able to walk a mile per week. She now walks 30 to 40 miles per week, and is hoping to complete the 26.2 mile Dublin Marathon in 6 and one-half hours.

'In spite of my own struggle with Fibromyalgia, I feel very fortunate and confident that I will be able to meet my goals.'

Amy adds that her husband, Darryl, and their two daughters, Mikhaela and Jessica, have been supportive and encouraging. 'Without them in my corner, I definitely would have a harder time doing what needs to be done for the fundraising, as well as for training.'

The Dublin Marathon will be held in Ireland on October 29. Amy's goal is to raise $4,000, and you can help her meet that goal with your tax-deductible donation. Make checks payable to the Arthritis Foundation and mail to Amy Sapp, 411 Valley Meadow Circle, Apt. T2, Reisterstown, MD 21136.

Amy and Darryl Sapp were in Newark last weekend, visiting Amy's parents, Jim and Sharon Beman, of Landon Ave.
