Rent a kayak in Lyons

If you've always wanted to take a trip in a kayak, but didn't have an opportunity, now's your chance.

Kayak Quests provides guided half- and full-day kayak tours or rentals, at the Erie Canal Cultural Center, 165 Water Street, Lyons.

Kayak Quests will operate out of the Erie Canal Cultural Center, launching from a site along the Erie Canal behind the cultural center. During the summer, kayaks may be rented on Wednesdays from 5-8 p.m.; Fridays from 5 to 7; Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 to 6.

Karen Bader and Jody Mutschler, owners, are available for tours covering Black Creek, West River, Mudge Creek, Beaver Creek, Irondequoit Creek, Erie Canal, Clyde River, Howland Island, Seneca River and more. They can put together kayaking packages for corporations seeking team-building experiences, celebrations, church groups, school groups, Scout troops and families. All levels of kayakers, from beginners to the advanced are welcome to participate.

Bader and Mutschler met at their daughters' soccer games three years ago and within a week and a half went from 'kayak conversation' to purchasing kayaks and spending weekends getting extensive experience. They paddle in 'Heritage' open cockpit kayaks, or sit-on-top kayaks, which they say are extremely user friendly, very stable and don't tip over easily. Mutschler said she knows from her own experience how easy and stable the kayaks are to ride.

Also a certified hypnotherapist, Mutschler said the movement of paddling, with its regular breathing and repetitive movement, can be hypnotic and relaxing.

Kayak Quests' philosophy is to provide the best outdoor experience while focusing on instruction, safety and responsible enjoyment. The owners are members of the Professional Paddlesports Association, have Red Cross First Aid and CPR training, are experienced in sit-on-top kayaks and are human development specialists.
