Singing classes at Sodus church

Sacred Harp harmony singing class, featuring singing Master Eric Bean, will be at St. John's Episcopal Church, 54 W. Main St., Sodus, on Friday, March 23, 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, April 7, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (The April 7 event includes dish-to-pass lunch.) Both events are free.

Shape note music: Traditional American folk music, sung a cappella in three or four parts, that uses shaped noteheads to indicate intervals.

Has a distinctive sound: modal, open chords, octave doubling, unusual harmonies. Is usually sung at full volume in an exuberant outpouring of sound and feeling.
