County 'outhouse' calendar gets national attention

The Wayne County Historical Society Outhouse Calendar project has gained national attention.

After an article describing the project appeared in a recent issue of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, the story was picked up by the AP Wire Service and ran in newspapers throughout the United States.

The story then aired on National Public Radio and, because of that, was picked up by the BBC and word spread into Canada.

'It seems like the phone hasn't stopped ringing since the article ran in the D&C,' said Andrea Evangelist, Executive Director of the Society. 'I already have orders for one hundred calendars and we haven't even finished taking pictures.'

learn more! All but seven of the 100 calendars ordered will go out of county and 25 are for people who live out of state.

Local photographer Bill Huff will be traveling to all of the 15 towns in the county to take pictures for this project. Evangelist is asking people to contact the Society and furnish the locations of any 'picturesque privies.' The Society will accept quality pictures from people would like to submit an outhouse for consideration for the publication. Photographs should be in color and should be turned in as soon as possible and not after May 30. Some photographs will also be used for the Museum exhibit, 'Inside Outhouses,' that opens in the Museum's Changing Exhibit Room on July 13, and will feature a full-sized outhouse.
