Local career-tech students win honors

Students attending Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Technical and Career centers recently left their marks of competency at two conferences sponsored by Skills USA-VICA (Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America).

Megan and Devin At the regional competition, students captured awards in their areas of expertise.

The top three awards in the Small Animal Care category were won by Wayne Technical and Career Center (WTCC) students:

Danielle Seavert, Newark, First Place;

Danielle Klaver, Marion, Second Place and

Tya Tingue, Sodus, Third Place.

All are seniors enrolled in the centers Animal Care and Handling Class.

Devin Taylor of Lyons was second in the Skills USA pin design contest;

Lindsay Brown, Marion, received a scholarship to Skills USA-VICA summer leadership camp.

Alecia Schlossnagle, Naples Horticulture student at FL Technical and Career Center, was second in Floral Design.

Megan Finch a junior from Gananda in WTCC's Cosmetology class, was elected Area 1 vice-president. She will work with other officers to plan conferences and leadership training sessions.

Matt Soper Twenty-nine students from FLTCC and twenty from WTCC attended the regional competition accompanied by instructor-advisers.

In Syracuse, at the state VICA competition, Matt Soper (pictured with trophy), a senior from Red Creek in WTCC's Electronics program, placed third in the six-hour Computer Maintenance competition. Soper, who has repaired computers since he was 10, competed against 18 students from across the state. First, he took a 100-question test and then moved through seven computer stations where he had to determine seven different problems and make the necessary repairs.

Shaena Bogart, Clyde-Savannah, a senior in the Graphics Communication class and VICA state president, presided over the 4,000 student assembly. Juniors, Nick Pennise, Metal Trades, Canandaigua, and Brad Hample, Auto Body, Midlakes, represented FLTCC in the House of Delegates.

Nineteen students attended the state competition from FLTCC and 10 from WTCC.
