Nancy Palmatier Meal Service volunteers honored

Wayne County Home Meal Service 'Meals-On-Wheels' volunteers were honored at a dinner at the Newark Elks Tuesday night. The Elks members hosted and sponsored the dinner for more than 150 people.

Meals-On-Wheels of Wayne County was started in 1973. Volunteers deliver meals to homebound persons living within the county, five days a week, excluding holidays.

Last year's board members were Chairman Don Palmatier (Board chair for two years), Vice Chair Helen Stewart, Secretary Judy DeKing, Treasurer Alfred Miller; members Dorothy Bartels, Joseph Brogan, Donna Chittenden, Sandra Ciaccia, Ronald Ganze, Karen Kehoe, Cynthia Kukuvka, Donna Murphy and Milton Wads.

The Home Meal Service (946.5622) is a private non-profit agency. The Meals-On-Wheels program is funded by Older Americans Act, NYS Office for the Aging, Wayne County Dept. of Aging and Youth, Community Services for the Elderly, individual contributions, United Way and churches and businesses.

Meals are delivered midday, and delivery takes an average of one hour. An automobile is required and mileage is reimbursable.

Jackie and Lindy KouwePictured are Jackie and Lindy Kouwe. Jackie is the retiring volunteer coordinator, and she will be replaced by Dolores Pierce-Elkins.

Sodus Nutrition Site (created in 1994) is sponsored by Home Meal Service and located at United Methodist Church, 56 West Main St. The site manager is Betty Mayou. Lunch is served at 11:30 Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. A two-dollar donation is appreciated. No one is denied a meal. Call 483.8362 to arrange for transportation to this site.

Ellie VanHaelst.Entertainment at Tuesday's dinner was provided by volunteer Ellie VanHaelst.

Last year, 45,000+ meals were delivered by Meals on Wheels or served at the Sodus Nutrition Site. A total of 1032 people in Wayne Co. were served.
