Marion Supervisor's report On May 9, the Council on Alcoholism's PROUD (Promoting Reduction Of Underage Drinking) Partnership hosted a public forum in our school for the purpose of sharing the results of a survey taken last fall by students in grades 8, 10, and 12. The questions asked were targeted at learning more about our children's view and usage of tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs, and indicated how Marion compared with other schools in the County. It certainly showed that we, as parents and a community, need to have more of an awareness of the responsibility we have in helping our kids stay clear of these substances. Join our SOC group! At the park, baseball is halfway over and soccer sign-ups are completed, and summer recreation registration is underway. Julie Wise Reesor is again in charge of the recreation program, and is looking forward to a great summer. She has received almost 30 applications for the 12 open counselor positions, which indicates great interest among our young adults in working with our youngsters. If you have any questions, direct them to Julie at 926.4167. Buffalo Street is going to undergo major construction, which will start soon and continue through the fall. Waterlines and utilities will replaced, and the road will be completely re-done by the County. I have been assured that there will always be one lane open for traffic, although during working hours, there might be delays. It will cause disruption, as most road projects do, and your patience will be appreciated. At the County Board of Supervisors' May meeting, a public hearing was held regarding the law commonly referred to as the 'No Smoking' law. The original one was passed last year, and it is due to go into effect on January 1, 2002. However, the hearing was to include amendments to the law which would make it less restrictive, especially in regards to smoking outdoors at a public facility or event. I did support the amendments, because they made sense and would require fewer enforcement issues. I was therefore disappointed that this amended law met with some dissension, although it passed with the weighted vote. Do you know that there is a program available in which you can receive 13 - 15 food items for $15.50? It is called Food Sense, and includes fresh fruits & vegetables, meats, and grocery staples. A sample purchase for one month included 3# ground beef, 1# macaroni, 2 cans tuna, corn flakes, spaghetti sauce; 1# fresh carrots, 5# potatoes, whole 3# ham, 2# white meat turkey roast, 1 # meatballs, dozen eggs, 1 # margarine, and 2# onions. The menu changes every month. This program is open to anyone - there is no income eligibility. If you are interested in learning more, call my office (926.4145), or Cooperative Extension at 331.8415. Finally, I would like to inform you that I have decided not to run for a 6th term as Supervisor. I have been in the political arena for 12 years, and I feel that it is time to step down and regain a personal life; which is not often possible in this position. Although I have enjoyed the majority of the time spent in politics, I would like to be able to have the freedom to pursue other interests, especially those involving my family. There are several people who have indicated an interest in running for this office - great for the people of Marion to be able to have some choices this year. The other positions up for election include councilman (2), highway superintendent, town clerk, and town justice. The Republican caucus will take place later this summer, at which time it will be decided who'll represent the Republican slate in the November elections. It is an important meeting since, historically, whomever wins at caucus will be the winner in November. If you are a registered Republican, I urge you to participate in this important process.
