Wayne children need Big Brothers/Sisters Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Rochester has expanded services in Wayne County with the support of Wayne County Youth Bureau and Wayne County United Way. Janet Gunkler is the new Wayne County Case Coordinator. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Rochester is a not-for profit human service agency founded in 1978. The goal is to match screened adult volunteer mentors with children who could benefit from a positive adult role model. Bigs (mentors) are adults over the age of eighteen who are willing to be a friend to a little (child). A Big Brother or Big Sister is not a substitute parent; not a teacher; and not a therapist or counselor. The relationship focuses on fun, communication, and guidance. Activities between bigs and littles are often casual and fun. The matches share many interests such as baking cookies together, planting a garden together, flying a kite together, watching a movie together, or just hanging around together. After a match has been approved, the BBBS agency through the Case Coordinator supports and maintains contact with the Big, Little, and parents. This important service fosters and maintains the match relationship so positive outcomes are achieved.
