Lyons police & deputies get vests

Congress announced last week that more than a dozen local law enforcement agencies in the 27th Congressional district will receive federal funding to help purchase bullet proof vests for their police officers.

The Bullet Proof Vest Partnership Act is administered by the Department of Justice, and splits the costs of the vests between the federal government and the local jurisdiction. According to FBI statistics, more than 40 percent of officers killed by firearms in the line of duty between 1980 and 1998, could have been saved had they been wearing a bulletproof vest. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that nearly 25 percent of state and local law enforcement officers do not have access to bulletproof vests.

Fifteen police agencies in the 27th Congressional district of U.S. Representative Tom Reynolds will receive more than $84,356 in matching grant funds to purchase a total of 623 vests.

Those receiving aid include:

  • Village of Lyons, 4 vests, $377.89
  • Village of Macedon, 2 vests, $328.96
  • Wayne County, 18 vests, $7,594.89
  • Monroe County, 332 vests, $26,937.74
  • Ontario County, 44 vests, $8,993.88
