Elks collect deer hides

With deer hunting season approaching, Exalted Ruler Thomas P. Gowan, Jr. of Lyons Elks Lodge #869 advises that the Lyons Elks are participating in the deer hide collection program. Under nationwide programs, Elks Lodges collect deer hides and provide for the processing and tanning of them.

The finished hides collected by Lyons Lodge will be delivered to the Canandaigua Veterans Hospital following the processing. The veterans residing there, as well as those in outpatient clinics, will then work with the hides as part of their physical and occupational therapy programs.

The program is conducted by the Elks at no expense to the veterans or taxpayers. Anyone wishing to donate a hide to the Elks will be provided with a certificate indicating that the donation is charitable in nature and has a value of $35.

Those wishing to donate hides should contact Jim Reynolds (946.6307) or John Wunder (946.3073) for pick up of the hide and delivery of the certificate.

Last year, Elks Lodges in the West Central District collected over 750 hides to assist local veterans. Newark Lodge last year collected 276 hides. The Newark deer hides chairman is Dave VerStraete. The number at the Newark Lodge is 331.1249.
