learn more DAR will honor Good Citizens

The Colonel William Prescott Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution of Wayne County will host the Senior Class 2002 DAR Good Citizens who have been selected by their respective schools as well as their two invited guests at the chapter house, 119 High Street, Newark on November 14.

Following the noon luncheon, Chapter Regent Cynthia Cuddeback of Sodus Point will conduct the traditional opening ritual. Public Relations Chairman Helen Walker of Phelps will give a brief overview of Our DAR.

Project chairman, Nancy Patrick of Wolcott will introduce the chosen students and present a DAR Good Citizen certificate and a pin symbolizing exemplary personal qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism to each one.

Students are:

  • Nathan Drahms, (Clyde-Savannah) son of Richard and Andrea Drahms of Savannah;
  • (Gananda Central did not enter a student);
  • Gregory Proseus, (Lyons), son of Robert and Susan Proseus of Lyons;
  • Katherine Lewis, (Marion), daughter of William and Debra Lewis of Marion;
  • Erin Daly, (Newark), daughter of Kevin and Mary Daly of Newark.
  • George Young, (North Rose-Wolcott), son of Bill and Ellen Young of South Butler;
  • Nicholas J. Macaluso, (Palmyra-Macedon) son of Giuseppe and Grace Macaluso of Canandaigua;
  • Jennifer Dates, (Red Creek) daughter of John and Barbara Dates of Red Creek;
  • Shawna Pike (Sodus), daughter of Gordon and Melanie Pike of Sodus;
  • Michelle Haak, (Wayne) daughter of Andrew and Catherine Haak of Ontario;
  • Joanna Alexander, (Williamson), daughter of Russell and Joyce Alexander of Williamson.

The winners of the timed, monitored and handwritten essay contest (as judged by three non-DAR members) will be announced, and monetary awards of first prize $100, second $50 and third $25 made.

The winning essay will be forwarded to district with possibility of advancing to state, division and national recognition at Continental Congress in July 2002.

Beginning in 1937 the local chapter has participated annually in the National DAR Good Citizen Pilgrimage. To date, more than 590 Wayne County high school seniors have represented their respective schools.

In 1975, eligibility was opened to boys. Five years later (1980), the Colonel William Prescott Chapter winner Daniel (Chip) Davis of Williamson Central won the national scholarship. Dr. Davis is now Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor having graduated from Harvard and having received a masters and a doctorate from Oxford. Davis' national award was $1000. Presently the National Good Citizen Scholarship is $3000.

Chapter winners last year were Bradley Seymour of North Rose-Wolcott; second, Peter Stevens of Palmyra-Macedon and third place, Erica Gansz of Lyons.

The luncheon for members, students and invited guests will be catered by Dolores Willemsen of Newark with hostesses Sue Buchanan, of Lyons, chairman; Jean Sturtevant of Sodus, Sylvia Harding and Florence Wilkins of East Palmyra and Lettie Farrell of Newark. Public Relations Chair Helen Walker says the program starts at 1 p.m. and is open to the public.
