Patriotic Christmas program in Clyde
The program is three-fold: to have the usual downtown Christmas lighting; pay tribute to those who were victims of the Sept. 11 tragedy; and recognize nearly 3 million men and women presently serving in our country's war against terrorism. On Saturday, December 1, residents are invited to join together in the Village Park for the downtown lighting and a special Christmas tree lighting. The expanded ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. The Rev. Robert Searle, of the Clyde Methodist Church, will lead the patriotic and non-denominational prayer service. The Clyde/Savannah High School Band will provide music. Santa will arrive on the firetruck with goodies for the children. Following the ceremonies, the Clyde Chamber extends an invitation to the Methodist Church, which has donated the use of the kitchen for hot chocolate and cookies. The Methodist Youth Group and their associates will distribute refreshments. The refreshments were donated by area merchants. The Village decor will consist of 36 lighted angels, 19 Christmas banners, the Gazebo and Park decorations, and merchant's decorations. The Park Gazebo will be decorated by Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth DiSanto. Boy Scout Troop #t12 will provide and place a Christmas tree on the Park Gazebo, and the Clyde /Savannah Girl Scouts Service group will decorate the Christmas tree in red, white and blue lights. There will be a number of small American flags and bows on the branches. Decorations will be on display through January 10 as a reminder of our country's purpose and as a tribute to armed service personnel and others who will be unable to join their families for the holidays. The merchants' prize drawings will be daily, beginning December 1, and continuing through the month. Darrell Marriott will be in charge of the drawings. The residential prizes for the best community displays will be judged on December 23. NYSEG will again this year donate three prizes (of credit toward utility bills). The judges for the decorations will be Bertha Canolesio, Jane Robert and Al Baris. Clyde residents and friends are asked to supply the names and addresses of service personnel they know who are serving our country this holiday season. Caring Friends of Wayne County, Inc., will send each of them a yuletide Christmas greeting. Sign up sheets for this project will be supplied to the local Churches and business places.
