Literacy Volunteers begin pledge drive

Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County, Inc., is gearing up for its annual pledge drive. The money raised is used to provide free instruction in reading, writing, and English to adults who live or work in Wayne County. Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County provides free individualized tutoring for a variety of skills, including beginning reading and writing, preparation for GED classes, workplace communication, job skills, permit and driver's tests, correspondence, reading to children, reading the Bible, and paying bills.

Most of this instruction takes place on a one-to-one basis, ensuring everyone who participates obtains the help he or she needs. According to federal estimates, there are at least 9000 adults in Wayne County who are illiterate, and an additional 19,000 who are functionally illiterate - that is, unable to read or write well enough to function successfully on their own. This makes up over 40 percent of the adult population.

Since September 11, the federal government needs to focus its resources on the safety of the nation. Citizens must do what they can to help people who want to improve themselves.

About 700 letters will go to individuals in 15 towns asking for donations. To learn more about supporting adult literacy, call 946.5333.
