Savannah Potato Festival this weekend

Potato Man Savannah Potato Fest plans are made. The dates are October 5, 6, and 7 and the fun takes place at the Savannah Community Field located on just west of the hamlet.

Gates open at 2 p.m. Friday with over 50 different craft and flea vendors. Sofo Amusements will have rides, and at 5 p.m. there's a stock lawn and garden tractor pull. 'The High Volume DJ and Light Show' by Dan Bush will provide music from 5-9 under the Entertainment Tent. At 6 p.m., judging will take place for the Photography Contest. Anyone can enter by submitting no more than two entries in the following categories: Our Greatest Resource: Our Land; or Our Future - Children. Saturday opens with a parade featuring the 2000 and 2001 Potato Fest Queen, Clyde-Savannah's Elementary Band, floats, old cars, trucks and tractors.

Donna and the Mystics will provide music from 11 a.m. to 4 on Saturday. The Potato Cooking Contest begins at 11:30 a.m. Participants need to register their special potato dishes in one of the following categories: Dessert, Main Dish and Breads. At noon the Antique Tractor Pull sponsored by the Junius Fire Department will begin on the track.

The Peddle Tractor Pull starts at 2. The winner walks away with a trophy but there are prizes for all who participate. At 4 p.m. the Potato Wrestling Event begins. Fred Clevenger directs the Mash Potato Tug of War, which immediately follows the Wrestling event. Anyone can participate in the Tug of War. And yes, the losing side will find themselves in a pit of mash potatoes.

The Backyard Circus, sponsored by Westcott's Furniture Stripping and Restoration, will have special shows. Friday evening at 7 there will be mutton busting and a sheep chase. These activities are open to younger children, weighing less than 60 lbs.

Sunday opens at 7:30 with a pancake breakfast that includes potato pancakes, regular pancakes, home fries, eggs and sausage. A church service will be held on the grounds. Tractor Parade starts at 10 followed by Kiddie Parade at 11:30.

Also Sunday, Wildfire will provide the music from noon to 5. Other events are a Classic Car Show, sponsored by the RPM Car Club from Lyons, and Super Modified Lawn Tractors will be challenged to pull 1000 to 1500 pounds, starting at 11 a.m.

At 1 p.m., Jim Bush will have a tool and merchandise auction. The final scheduled event for the 2001 Potato Fest will be the Potato Gun Shoot-out at 2 p.m. This will take place in the baseball field.

There will be plenty of potato dishes for you to enjoy including the usual salt potatoes, French fries, baked potatoes and even potato pancakes and frycakes. There are food vendors and local churches offering potato dishes, along with the other more typical festival foods. The Savannah Fire Department will have a chicken barbecue Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon.

Potato Fest is a sponsored event of the Savannah Chamber of Commerce. The chairman is John Spellman, 365.3156.
