Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Another beautiful warm week. I hope you enjoyed it as much as you could, because it looks like the colder weather is on the way.

The Sodus Library is busy working on the long process of becoming automated. Carol assures me that they are making great strides. Also, the Sodus Library is making October fine-free month, so if you have any overdue books, now is the time to get them back to the library.

The Williamson Public Library is having its Used Book Sale starting next Thursday at 10 a.m.

Happy belated Birthdays to Janet Clark and Diane Phillips. Other October Birthdays are Sue Lowenguth, Jeremy Pike (this one's getting old much too fast), John Leiders and Diane Wittmeyer. (Jeremy, by the way, is a Halloween baby. How neat is that?)

Guess who I saw at school the other day? Mrs. Maier and her rabbit, Woody, many of you would remember her from 1st grade. I had reported a story about the ducks she hatched from eggs in a incubator. Mrs. Maier used to teach at the Sodus Primary school not that long ago. (I thought that rabbit looked familiar.) The other bunny she had was named Fluffy. Actually, Alyssa Lennox had her for a teacher in first grade.

Don't forget the train to go see the leaves and the hayrides this weekend. The hayrides at the Apple Shed in Fairville are a lot of fun. You go through the orchards and into the woods. It's always fun to let the kids feed the farmyard friends while you browse through the gift shop. (I can just smell the apples now... and those great doughnuts.)

I've seen and heard a lot of geese lately, but so far I haven't seen Ralph and Betty Everdyke in their numbers. And have you seen all the squirrels?! They are obnoxiously in the way all the time. They are driving Caesar nuts (not sure if he likes them or hates them).

No School on Monday for Columbus Day. And this Sunday begins Fire Prevention Week. All the school kids will be learning about fire safety. The Sodus Center Fire Hall will be having their Chicken BBQ on Sunday, October 7 from noon until sold out.

Carol from Washington DC said they are slowly getting back to normal. I think it's going to take us a long time to get through this one. People go on with their daily lives, but we will never forget the tragic losses. It's tough to believe someone could do such a horrendous thing. Flags are hanging out and flying everywhere, which is a great sign of patriotism and support.

If you'd like to donate blood, go Thursday, October 11 from 2-7 at the Old Firemen's field in Ontario and Saturday the l3th from 9 to 2 at the Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Sodus. Many people feel badly they can't do more to help, but this is a great way to contribute. Thanks to all the Firemen who took collections in the boots and to all of you who donated. (I saw the guys with the boots and was at first very confused.)

If you have something you'd like to share (whether you live in town or have moved away), I want to hear from you. Please write to me at

Have a great week and, as always, stay cozy with some good books.
