Dog Walk-A-Thon a success

dog The 5th Annual Dog Walk-A-Thon to benefit the Humane Society of Wayne County was held Sunday, September 30 at Silver Hills Technology Park in Newark. There were 114 registered canines with human companions that raised over $12,000 - a Humane Society record. 100% of all of the money raised will go directly to the cost of operating the shelter and care of the animals.

After walking and working up an appetite, the humans could purchase a delicious chicken barbecue served up by Burnham's Canalside Restaurant. The hungry canines were provided with treats courtesy of Milk Bone. The Local Shepherds provided the music. Additional entertainment was provided by the Pawsitively Canine 4-H Drill Team.

The guest of honor this year was Hoppy, a three-legged dog adopted from the shelter by the Peterson's of Swedish Hill Vineyard. The Peterson's took time away from the grape harvest to spend the afternoon at the Walk-A-Thon. Of course, there was tasting of the various award-winning Swedish Hill wines.

Many door prizes were donated by generous local merchants. Awards were given to the top three individual Walk-A-Thon participants who raised the most money. In first place, raising a grand total of $241.88, were Pat and Sarah Bauer of Lyons. Mrs. Bauer and her daughter won an indoor pet containment system courtesy of Invisible Fence of Upstate New York. The second place winner was Manuela Kowitt of Rochester who raised $220. Ms. Kowitt won a $50 savings bond donated by the WCTA Federal Credit Union. Mr. & Mrs. Fred DeRossett of Newark, who raised $215, took third place. The DeRossett's won a microchip for their dog, Lady, which was donated by Companion Animal Recovery with insertion donated by Newark Veterinary Hospital.

A special heartfelt thank you to both canine and human participants, volunteers and sponsors.
