Red Cross responds to tragedy

The American Red Cross is pledging aid to the victims of yesterday's tragedy in the New York City area and to the New York Blood Center (NYBC), which supplies blood to the hospitals in the city, by immediately reserving half of the local supply (1000 units) to be sent to New York as needed.

Blood donors throughout the region are urged to join in this show of support by donating blood as soon as possible.

Red Cross is experiencing low supplies of blood types B positive, O negative, A negative and AB negative, but all blood types will be needed, especially blood types O positive and O negative - the blood types transfused in emergency cases.

Many old and new donors will be needed throughout the coming weeks to meet increased blood needs in the New York City area and to supply local hospitals.
