scarecrow A scarecrow contest planned at the Shed

Calling all scarecrows! We invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual Scarecrow Convention, Sept. 29 to Oct.. 31.

One hundred years ago, we had many scarecrows dotting the countryside. Farmers and gardeners used them as a way to discourage birds and animals from eating the seeds, seedlings and mature fruit in the fields and gardens. In America, the figure was usually made of old clothes and the stuffing was hay or straw.

In celebration of this lost art, The Apple Shed is sponsoring a scarecrow contest. They are looking for traditional or newly-recycled characters. Why don't you put together (from leftovers, of course) a scarecrow and send your entry to our convention? There is no entry fee, so this could cost you essentially nothing and could be a fun family or group activity! CASH PRIZES!

Individuals, families, schools and community groups may participate. A special area will be set aside for convention attendees (scarecrows) and there will be no admission fee for guests. Also, a special tent will be available to 'Make Your Own Scarecrow.' (A small fee will be charged to cover the cost of materials).

Grand Prize: $250

Category awards: $50 First place, $25 second place (except school entries, one prize of $50 per age group will be awarded).

Judges special awards will be:

  • Best use of traditional materials (old clothes, straw, hay, cornhusks, old farm tools, etc.)
  • Best use of contemporary materials (cans, plastic, rubber masks, etc.); Historical, Scariest, Funniest

Questions? Call 315.331.6294. Entry forms (available at the Shed) are due September 29.
