Book Review luncheon in Newark

The Friends of the Newark Public Library will hold their first book review luncheon for this season on Friday, October 5 at noon at the library on High Street.

Madeline R. Short will be the first of many speakers. Married to Capt. James Short, USMC, Mrs. Short frequently moved with her Marine husband for 24 years as he fought in two wars. Retiring from the Corps after Vietnam, the Shorts moved to Rochester.

Joining the Century Club of Rochester, she was asked to give a review for its book club, and has been doing this for the past 17 years. An active volunteer, Short also is a vital member of her church, the Landmark Society of Western NY, Pittsford Garden Club, KKG Alumnae Association, and Pittsford Food Cupboard.

She will review the book, The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton by Jane Smiley. This historical fiction, a charming and moving story about a free-spirited young woman, takes place during the bitter struggle between Missouri and Kansas over the slavery issue prior to the Civil War.

Reservations for the $4 luncheon may be made by calling the Newark Library at 331.4370.
