History program on E. Palmyra schools

Did you know that starting in 1793, there have been ten public and parochial schools in East Palmyra?

In cooperation with the East Palmyra Fire Department, the Early East Palmyra Committee will present the sixth in a series of annual programs featuring the East Palmyra schools.

The committee, consisting of Palmyra Historian Beth Hoad, Sylvia Harding, Harry and Florence Wilkins, Meg VandenBout and Elizabeth DeWitt, have organized another of their successful programs dealing with the history of the hamlet of East Palmyra.

The program will be held on Saturday, April 13, at the East Palmyra Fire Department and will begin with a Pot Luck Supper at 5:30. Disposable plates, tableware, coffee and tea will be furnished by the department, and all attending are asked to bring a dish to pass.

The presentation begins at 6:45 p.m., and admission is free.

Local people will present the program, and there will be displays of pictures, documents and suitable artifacts. The presentation will include information about the first school, the old-fashioned one-room schools, the Union School, the East Palmyra Christian School and the beginning of the Heritage Baptist School.

Everyone is welcome. The committee feels this would be a good way for children to learn about going to school in East Palmyra in the old days. It is also an excellent opportunity for parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends to get together and compare memories.

Anyone with questions or wishing to donate memorabilia or information can do so by bringing such items or stories to the program in person, or by calling Palmyra Historian Beth Hoad at 597.5521 or 597.9658, or Sylvia Harding at 597.4290.
