Canaltown Days cancelled this year After considerations by and conversations with the Canaltown Days Executive Committee, General Committee, and the NYS Dept. of Transportation, Canaltown Days 2002 will not take place in Palmyra this year. The event will be held next year, on September 13 and 14. Given the anticipated condition of downtown Palmyra this September, due to the Route 31 Reconstruction Project, organizers determined it not feasible to attempt to hold the 2002 celebration. At that time, the south side of the street will still be torn up and under construction. Although the NYS DOT has agreed to stop construction for that weekend, having only half of Main Street would not accommodate the festival. According to Tom Klemann, 'With the thousands of people that attend our celebration, we simply would not be able to operate, either safely or comfortably under those conditions. In addition to the fact that there would not be sufficient space to hold our parades, car show, street entertainment, or handle our crowds, the safety of our patrons and vendors must be of utmost importance...' No other location could accommodate the entire festival. Several people in the past have suggested moving Canaltown Days to the fairgrounds. Although this would handle crowds and vendors, the only parade alternative would be West Jackson Street. Unfortunately, the sides of the street and residents' front lawns would not be sufficient to handle the crowds that gather to watch our parade. By next September, the downtown phase of the project will be done so that the festival can continue. Over the course of the year the committee will continue to plan and prepare.
