Historical Society needs shelves

The Wayne County Historical Society is looking for shelving units to use in their new storage facility on Church Street. The county-owned three-story brick building, remembered as 'The Park Bakery,' was most recently used as the site of the County Legal Aid Offices and the Printing Department. After those offices were moved to other quarters, the two upper floors of the Church Street building stood unused while the ground floor was utilized for equipment storage.

'Safeguarding our collections has been a issue at the Wayne County Museum and Old Jail for quite some time,' explains Director Andrea Evangelist. The attic is unsuitable for warehousing because of the intense summer heat and the basement area and jail cells are too damp to house artifacts.

'Since most of the former sheriff's home is used for exhibit or office space, we had to look offsite for storage areas,' Evangelist added.

Evangelist took her problem to the Wayne County Board of Supervisors and was recently granted permission to use the upper two floors of the Church Street building fro Museum purposes.

Evangelist and her husband, Richard, spent a day working with community service workers to get the area ready for use. The Society is now spreading the word that sturdy shelving is needed for their new storage area.

'Any type of shelving could be used for our purposes,' said Evangelist. 'The main thing is that it has to be free or extremely inexpensive,' she added. Since the Wayne County Historical Society is a not-for-profit agency, all donations would be tax-deductible.
