Hotchkiss Reunion planned
It will be held at the American Legion Hall, Water Street, Lyons, where more than 50 Hotchkiss descendants and relatives from many parts of North America will gather to exchange family records. Following a tour of the former office of the Hotchkiss Essential Oils Company, there will be a luncheon where Anne D. Hotchkiss will be the guest of honor. After lunch, Dick Kelley will give a presentation on the history of the peppermint business and, in particular, the role it played in the development of Lyons and Wayne County. Since 1883 when it was formed, with the exception of a few years, the Hotchkiss Family Association, Inc. has held an annual reunion. Attended by descendants of Samuel Hotchkiss and his wife, Elizabeth Cleverly, all of the past 118 reunions have been held in locations near New Haven, Connecticut where Samuel first settled in 1642. This year the reunion, for the first time, will be held not in Connecticut, but in Lyons. There are many Hotchkiss descendants who have left their mark in history - inventors, manufacturers, and prominent businessmen. Lyons was selected for the 2002 reunion because of the prominence in its history of Hiram Gilbert Hotchkiss (1810-1897) who founded the H. G. Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company, at one time the foremost producer of quality peppermint oil in the world. The immigrant Samuel Hotchkiss (1622-1663) came from Whitchurch, Shropshire, England and was married in the New Haven Colony in 1642. His family consisted of six sons and one daughter, with the result that there are many Hotchkiss' who can trace their ancestry to Samuel. Hiram G. Hotchkiss and his great-grandaughter, Anne D. Hotchkiss, are descendants of Samuel's son John. Reservations can be made by phoning Stu Hotchkiss, at 589.8011. Genealogical inquires should be made to the Association's Corresponding Secretary, Joan A. Johnson, 36 Beach Drive, Prospect, CT 06712-1603.
